Ward 3

Nirva LaFortune is a newly elected Providence City Council Member, representing Ward 3.  Councilwoman LaFortune is the Manager and Advisor of Presidential Scholars Program (PSP) and a first-year advisor in the Dean of College (DoC) at Brown University. She oversees and coordinates all administrative, programming and advising elements of the PSP program and is responsible for the coordination and planning of programs in the DoC to support students from historically under-represented groups and students with the greatest financial need.  

 

Before returning to Providence from Philadelphia, Nirva served as assistant director of the Centers for Public Policy and Science, Technology, and Society at Drexel University, and as an administrator in the Center for Academic Advising at Temple University’s Fox School of Business.

 

Nirva’s dedication to her community and education equity is supported by over a decade of professional experience in higher education, community engagement and volunteerism locally and abroad. Nirva 's commitment to equity in education extends beyond higher education. She served on a committee of practitioners and community leaders advising the RI Department of Education on implementing  ESSA, the federal law that governs the nation's public school system. She also served on a design committee charged with developing two new high schools in the Providence Public School District.  She served as a board member at Independence Charter School in Philadelphia, where she collaborated with educational leaders and community members to create resources to address issues in educational disparities and has volunteered locally and abroad in underserved communities and has been a strong advocate for immigrant rights.
